For those of you familiar with The Christmas Pony Melody Carlson's latest Christmas story brings once again a wholesome offering for the Season! 
There is something gratifying in holding Melody's novels, each cover beautifully illustrated and featuring raised letters, the synopsis an indication this is just the sort of novel you can and will share in all probability with everyone! She writes with her heart like any good storyteller!

A stirring tale of a small child who loses both parents to a tragedy during the Christmas season only to find out the aunt who is taking care of her must give her up to a whole unknown branch of the family! 

There has been many stories written about the Amish but this has a twist! How far will someone go to keep someone they love?

For Rachel who has lost her brother and his young wife to an airplane crash, the reading of their will brings a bitter twist to her hastily revised plans for the future. According to the legal document she must relinquish Holly to the little girl's Amish aunt...

Melody Carlson weaves a touching story of hope and love mingled with despair and even anger, drawn against the plain Amish world. 

A lighthearted tale of bridges built across two worlds and a simple Christmas wish...

You'll enjoy this one tucked in by the fire with a cuppa!

About the Author:

Melody Carlson has written around 200 books for teens, women and children. That's a lot of books, but mostly she considers herself a "storyteller." 

Her books range from serious issues like schizophrenia (Finding Alice) to lighter topics like house-flipping (A Mile in My Flip-Flops) but most of the inspiration behind her fiction comes right out of real life. Her young adult novels (Diary of a Teenage Girl, True Colors etc.) appeal to teenage girls around the world. 

Her annual Christmas novellas become more popular each year. She's won a number of awards (including the Rita and Gold Medallion) and some of her books have been optioned for film/TV.

Here are my thoughts:

With her Liberator series* to my thinking, Tricia Goyer proved to be a formidable author and her novels reflects a deep faith along great research! That said, I have enjoyed far more other authors' Amish novels as you will have noticed by my reviews here. 
A Christmas Gift For Rose however struck a special cord with me and I was only too happy to make the cut as a reviewer for this particular title! 
Christmas is on the horizon Folks!

Whilst stationed overseas Jonathan wrote to Rose: "I'll be back in Berlin before Christmas Rose. Let's not wait until next harvest to get married."

Thanksgiving - Berlin, Ohio 1945: Rose has endured the murmurs behind her back from neighbours and friends, even the Bishop has visited to express his concerns about Jonathan volunteering to go overseas and serve as a Medic and perhaps already determined to leave their community.
Despite Jonathan's assurance he has not carried a weapon and cared only for the wounded, it is quite conceivable he will no longer fit in the Amish circle and Rose will not speak to him.

With Thanksgiving celebrations and WW 2 now over, Rose and her family offers prayers for the many families who lost their loved ones during the conflict and for those soldiers who came home carrying the heavy burden of the horrors they have witnessed on the battlefields.
After meeting with a nearby Englisher neighbour, she realizes the reasoning behind Jonathan's involvement and lets him back in her life.

For years Rose has experienced nightmares and her Mem worries she might stumble on a secret which would devastate their family. When Mem reveals Rose is an Englisher, she feels her whole life is a sham and she is desperately trying to figure where she belongs. Perhaps like Jonathan, she no longer fits in their community!
Distressed, Rose shares with Jonathan her findings albeit his reaction is not exactly what she anticipated!

A journey of love, faith and sacrifice, A Christmas Gift For Rose is a beautiful story set in the Amish community in the aftermath of WW2.

Don't miss it! A great gift for Amish aficionados and well worth 5 stars!

Book 1 of 'The Inn at Eagle Hill' series, The Letters takes us back to the Plain life in Stoney Ridge. 
The world Suzanne Woods Fisher creates for her readers is always comforting, a little like meeting old friends, sit on a porch and sip a cup of tea! With her usual attentive touch to details, Suzanne gives us a whole new story yet again!

Until I started reading her novels, I did not realize the multiple facets of the Old World life. In this particular instance, Suzanne reintroduces old timers and favourite characters such as Hank, Amos and Fern Lapp, M.K. now all grown up and a teacher, Jimmy Fisher and his antics...and many others!

Meeting Rose Schrock and her family brings delightful insights on the Amish thanks to the extent of Suzanne Woods Fisher knowledge about their community!

Rose by all accounts has much to be bitter about yet she shines as her faith helps her to overcome problems most of us would crumble under. 
Her husband's sudden death, her acerbic mother in law's increasingly poor health, her step daughter Bethany mooning over an outsider and sweet Mim, who wants so much to help out, the disappearance of her step son after his father's untimely death, her young sons growing up without a father's guidance and of course her financial problems weighs heavily on her shoulders. 
Anyone else would have already surrender to despair but Rose rises above it all!

When she overhears a conversation she is inspired to start her own Bed and Breakfast right at the farm, which seems by all accounts a sensible way to relieve her family's financial difficulties. With the help of a nearby friend and the approval of her Bishop, Rose envisions a lucrative way to handle the future and gets right to work.

However when a distressed Englisher shows up at the farm in need of shelter, Rose soon realizes there is more to B & B than hanging a shingle or baking her famous blueberry Cornbread...
Prayers might just be the only answer to these new developments or perhaps a miracle...

'A Big Year For Lily' is the third installment in The Adventures of Lily Lapp series anticipated by many children (as young as 6 years old it seems) if rumours are true. A new 'Anne of Green Gables' or 'Little House on the Prairie' perhaps? 

Thanks to the teamwork of Mary Ann Kinsinger and bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher, it is an ideal introduction to the world of Amish children as you will remember from the previous titles ('Life with Lily' reviewed HERE and 'A New Home for Lily' reviewed HERE).

From the beginning Lily won our heart with her big smile and spunky attitude as the enticing cover shows.   The little girl shown illustrates the delightful character we have discovered in Suzanne and Mary Ann's warm hearted stories!

Lily will soon be 10 years old and there are many changes in store for her. Being the only girl in the family, she is now entitled to her own bedroom (even if it has a few bats). She will now sit with the older children in church instead of with her Mum and then there is school to attend...
Growing up is never easy for anyone but Lily is the first to admit she has her share of challenges: having her cousin Hannah in class was great until she discovers Hannah does not share Lily's feelings about her classmate Aaron. Than there is the taffy incident...Outch! Poor Lily...

Throughout the story we see a little Amish girl who feels just like any other child and lives in a secure environment where everyone helps their neighbour...A few lessons to be garnered for most of us!

A heartfelt thank you to both authors for a story you will not hesitate to share with children age 8 to 12 and even the younger ones. Parents and Grandparents will enjoy sharing these delightful adventures with their families.

I am a fan Folks, so I give 5 stars!

Here are my thoughts:

Leave it to the matriarch of the Amish genre to come up with yet another gem! Since she first began to entertain us with stories of this cloistered community, Beverly Lewis has repeatedly captivated fans and acquired many new readers with her insight into this mysterious world few of us has seen and understand.

In 'Home To Hickory Hollow', Book # 3 'The Guardian' we discover a strong willed little Amish girl named Sarah and Jodi, the troubled young woman who finds the little darling when she tumbles out of her Mum's buggy and gets lost.

Beverly Lewis systematically introduces us to many facets of the Old Order Amish community we know little or next to nothing such as intermarriages and deriving genetic disorders or their reluctance to involve the authorities even in the case of a missing child.
I was surprised at the 'no pets allowed in a household' preference but cannot but marvel at their strong sense of community and survival in an ever encroaching English world.
The concept of an outsider being not only accepted in such a tight community as a close friend but also hired to teach their children even on a temporary basis was definitively unexpected.

Always at her best when she describes the ties that draw people together no matter their origins, Beverly Lewis approaches the subject of pain and loneliness which occurs after losing loved ones.
For Maryanna Esh, Joshua Peachey and Jodi Winfield, there is a lesson to be learned as long as they have faith! 

"The soul yearns for tranquility but the only real peace comes from communing with God." 

Returning readers will enjoy meeting old friends such as Ella Mae the Wise Woman and her down to earth approach to life but never fear this 'Home To Hickory Hollow' story stands on its own!

Beverly Marie Jones (Lewis) was born in the heart of Amish country—Lancaster, Pennsylvania. At the tender age of nine, she began writing short stories and poetry. Prior to that, she made up lyrics to the "little fingers" piano pieces she learned, at the age of five.

"My mother saved everything I wrote, even the stories I dreamed up during my grade school years," Bev says. One such tale is semi-autobiographical, about a young girl whose parents can no longer afford to give her piano lessons. The manuscript was 77 pages long and titled "She Shall Have Music," penned under the shade of a lone willow tree. Unbreakable by Nancy Mehl, Book review & GIVEAWAY

My thoughts:

Combining mystery with a touch of romance against the Old Order Mennonite tenet of non violence, 'Unbreakable' begins with the news churches nearby the town of Kingdom are being targeted by arson. 
With the safety of their members becoming a real concern, a group of individuals, both Mennonites and English, decide to patrol the roads leading to the town. 
Almost immediately there is a definite split betwixt those who will carry a weapon and those who refuse, the possibility of any violence, against their faith. 

Against all this, we have Hope Kauffman whose feelings toward her intended are so confused both parties decided to end their betrothal. Enters her new suitor, Jonathan, whom unlike his brethren, believes it is time to take action and protect their town however the cost. 

Add to all this, a caustic, uncaring Sheriff, escalating threats from a mysterious source, a burning church and much confusion about when enough is enough, and you have an idea of what the author alludes in her plot.

At times very slow, 'Unbreakable', Book 2 of the 'Road to Kingdom' series truthfully was not the entertainment I sought, although it brought to light no one is immune to doubts when it comes to beliefs. The rationale process behind this portion of the plot was perhaps tedious but never the less realistic.
And keeping in mind the very real threats spoken of, not to be ignored in these troubled times,  the author's earnest intention included, it seems, a wish for us to reflect at our (all together too quick) reactions when provoked. I cannot say for sure in which group I belong...

Though Mountains Fall by Dale Cramer, Book review

Starting with Paradise Valley (see review here) Dale Cramer gave us two additional books in the 'Daughters of Caleb Bender' Trilogy, with 'Though Mountains Fall', Book 3 last in the series.
I would like to suggest you start with 'Paradise valley' and 'The Captive Heart' to truly appreciate the depth of the whole series.

For those of you who are not yet familiar with this author, let me quickly say Dale Cramer's penmanship blends Amish genre with a touch of Louis L'Amour and legendary Zane Grey's western style!
Who would have thought it possible? Yet he does and with unmistakable flair. 'Though Mountains Fall' is surely another feather in his cap!

The Amish settlement in Mexico in the 1920's with Caleb Bender as the first Elder to have settled in Paradise Valley, struggles to survive. Renegade attacks, pernicious disease and general unrest in the colony have undermined the peaceful atmosphere Caleb and the other settlers strives to maintain. Caleb hopes the arrival of a Bishop might help to alleviate their concerns.

But their beliefs are stretched to their limits when a Bandidos' attack is imminent and their only recourse is to ask for the Mexican government's help.This requires financial back up they are unable to meet and the local Hacienda owner is unwilling to intercede.

When the Federales however finally arrive, they bring with them all sorts of new troubles leading Caleb to wonder if this valley is truly Gott's will for his family and friends after all. When tragedy hits yet again, the settlement's whole existence is questioned and Caleb humbly faces the harsh reality of failing to protect those he loves most.

If I have been somewhat vague in relenting details, it is because to reveal more would be to spoil the intense plot! True to his previous writings, the author does not avoid honest yet harsh turmoil in his storytelling.
Clearly Dale Cramer relies on his knowledgeable background as well as facts taken from an actual Amish settlement in Mexico, with the dramatic ending of the series, a reminder we cannot control events, only our actions.

Furthermore I admit I enjoyed the series (or to clarify, the two books of the series I have read) and I understand the peaceful Amish community is not immune to the outside world's struggles.
But...I prefer my readings to be less intense, leaning to enjoy more peaceful renderings of the Amish world.

My thoughts:

The first thing you notice when you hold a copy of Wanda Brunstetter's latest novel is the singular format: you can hold the book in your palm at 7.3 x 4.1 x 0.6 inches, a mere 4 ounces! I admit to like this 'new' approach very much. 
A New York Times Bestselling Christian author, there is something comforting in Wanda's wholesome writing and you just know it will be clear, concise, and a reflection of her deep respect for the Amish community.

Whilst some might perceive the slow progress of the plot as tedious, let's remember this is after all  part 1 of 6 in 'The Discovery' series and the author is merely establishing a background for her story.

In 'Goodbye to Yesterday' we discover the slow economy is hard for all including Amish Meredith and Luke Stolzfus. Married only a year, Luke is having a difficult time handling the stress since losing his job at the furniture store. 

When the opportunity to learn a new trade comes his way he jumps at the occasion. This might just help him to fall back on his two feet and support his family. The drawback is that he must travel to Indiana to pursue this offer and with a winter storm brewing, Meredith is apprehensive at this temporary separation. 
There is also something very special she had hoped to share with her husband but now is not the time and all too soon, Luke is on his way. 

Whilst traveling to Indiana to learn his new trade from his uncle, Luke however makes a dramatic encounter which changes their lives perhaps forever.

I remember well childhood similar formatted stories but I admit the conundrum of the story is enticing only up to a point. I have grown fond of reading a whole book versus time released chapters. Sadly, I might very well forget part 1 and never know the rest! Still, it is a matter of choice after all!

In so far Goodbye to Yesterday remains a good story!

My thoughts:

'The Adventures of Lily Lapp' series started with a resounding success as seen in 'Life With Lily' (see review here) so I was not surprised to see 'A New Home For Lily', Book two, my own 5 stars rating shared by many readers! 

Betwixt Suzanne Woods Fisher and Mary Ann Kinsinger there is a perfect chemistry to bring the Amish genre a young appeal! Let's hope those two talented authors will continue to treat us!


One look at the lovely six years old featured on their book covers is enough to tantalize us in discovering what else the smiling little girl has come up with since the first book! 
Albeit geared to the 8 to 12 years old audience, Lily introduces readers of all ages to a whole new way to see the Amish community! Her spontaneity is so refreshing, I can think of nothing else than to suggest you pick up your own copy! 

Through Lily's eyes we see what happens to her family as they move to another state to be nearer their closest relatives. 
Lily no longer has her own bedroom, her bed now tucked in a corner in the hallway. Her new house has a sad olive green hue, the barn sorely needs repairs, her school mates includes a bully and her new community has a completely different set of rules! 
Lily has to get used to her new life and does not like it much. 

On the other end, there is so much to explore and have fun with, including Grand Pa's lumber mill with its big sawdust pile to play in!  
Her Dad acquires four goats to add to Jenny, Mum's lovely Swiss cow, her new teacher is very nice and Lily's new baby brother Paul is so cute...

It is the countless little details the two authors have included in their stories which gives it additional appeal such as when poor Lily hits her thumb with a hammer and Mum dissolves aspirin in water for her to soak her sore finger to relieve the pain or when Mum must sew a whole new set of clothes for everyone in the family as the new community has different rules than the previous one.

What better way to introduce youngsters to the Amish way of life (and share some quality family time)!

'A New Home For Lily' is sure to delight everyone, young and old! Ladies, we are looking forward to the next story!
