    Remembrance Day

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

    They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, not the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
    We will remember them.

Day After Night by Anita Diamant, Book review

  • Hardcover: 304 pages
  • Publisher: Scribner (September 8, 2009)
  • ISBN-13: 978-0743299848
  • Also available in KINDLE format

  • SYNOPSIS:

  • Just as she gave voice to the silent women of the Old Testament in The Red Tent, Anita Diamant creates a cast of breathtakingly vivid characters -- young women who escaped to Israel from Nazi Europe -- in this intensely dramatic novel.
Day After Night is based on the extraordinary true story of the October 1945 rescue of more than two hundred prisoners from the Atlit internment camp, a prison for "illegal" immigrants run by the British military near the Mediterranean coast south of Haifa. The story is told through the eyes of four young women at the camp with profoundly different stories. All of them survived the Holocaust: Shayndel, a Polish Zionist; Leonie, a Parisian beauty; Tedi, a hidden Dutch Jew; and Zorah, a concentration camp survivor. Haunted by unspeakable memories and losses, afraid to begin to hope, Shayndel, Leonie, Tedi, and Zorah find salvation in the bonds of friendship and shared experience even as they confront the challenge of re-creating themselves in a strange new country.
This is an unforgettable story of tragedy and redemption, a novel that reimagines a moment in history with such stunning eloquence that we are haunted and moved by every devastating detail. Day After Night is a triumphant work of fiction.

  • My thoughts:

  • I have to agree with the synopsis' final statement, DAY AFTER NIGHT is a triumphant work of fiction. How else could you describe the fullness in your heart after reading Anita Diamant's phenomenal description of these young women's will to live?

  • A dramatic account of what a handful of survivors of Nazi persecution faced after the liberation of the concentration camps which held them prisoners, this novel is written with care and respect for the millions of souls who lost their lives and those who fought to rise again from the ashes.

  • Each of the four young women described in this account have different stories, each survived the Holocaust, and their newest status of illegal immigrants in a British military compound weighs heavily on their heart.
  • Just the mere mention of the barbed wire surrounding the camp allows you a glimpse of what each must have felt.

  • For many relocated survivors, there was the realization that no one cared to know what happened to them, what they had lost, what they had suffered and were mourning. There were also those who avoided talks of roundups, forced marches, mass graves and death camps. Those who were lucky enough to arrive first or those who lived already in Palestine were always thirsty for news of their hometowns or relatives. When you had nothing to share, you were asked if you were ready to throw yourself body and soul into Avodah Ivrit, the work of building up the land.

  • Deprived of everything, each young woman shows in this narrative their tenacity to forget the past and make a new future for themselves. The fact that Anita Diamant wove in it the 1945 true story of how more than 200 prisoners escaped from the relocation camp makes it that much more special.

A triumphant account of surviving the darkest hours of WW 2, this is a novel about hope and living in its full measure. Well worth reading!!

    5 Stars!!

Their Name Is Today by Johann Christoph Arnold, Book review and GIVEAWAY

    • Paperback: 189 pages
    • Publisher: Plough Publishing House (September 22, 2014)
    • ISBN-13: 978-0874866308
    • Also available in KINDLE format

    SYNOPSIS:

There’s hope for childhood. Despite a perfect storm of hostile forces that are robbing children of a healthy childhood, courageous parents and teachers who know what’s best for children are turning the tide.

Johann Christoph Arnold, whose books on education, parenting, and relationships have helped more than a million readers through life’s challenges, draws on the stories and voices of parents and educators on the ground, and a wealth of personal experience. He surveys the drastic changes in the lives of children, but also the groundswell of grassroots advocacy and action that he believes will lead to the triumph of common sense and time-tested wisdom.

Arnold takes on technology, standardized testing, overstimulation, academic pressure, marketing to children, over-diagnosis and much more, calling on everyone who loves children to combat these threats to childhood and find creative ways to help children flourish.
Every parent, teacher, and childcare provider has the power to make a difference, by giving children time to play, access to nature, and personal attention, and most of all, by defending their right to remain children.

    My thoughts:

The mere mention of reclaiming childhood in a hostile world gets our attention as parents, particularly those of us who have a preschool child.
In an era filled with electronic gadgets such as computers, I pads, gaming devices of all sorts called 'teaching tools' most children hardly ever go outside and play like normal children should.

There is of course a sad reality we cannot ignore and that is society no longer affords a safe world for our children these days. Perhaps we have ignored the danger signals, that in thinking to restrict their environment for safety reasons, we have in fact taken from our children the possibility to be just mere children.

I cringe in imagining today's children retreating to their rooms and playing games, challenging games yes, but where is the interaction so necessary to a normal, healthy development? And then, there is the violent games which boggles the mind.
Have we so little care for what our children have access to that we let them be subject to media coercing? For the media is a real threat here as we are shown constantly what is better, faster, more trendy etc...

Additionally parents expect their children to excel in school expecting more and more of them as newer and better teaching software technology becomes available.
It is no wonder that children have less and less time to play and be just kids.

In Their Name Is Today: Reclaiming Childhood In a Hostile World, Johann Christoph Arnold express not only his concerns at our lack of attention to this very real problem. In clear concise format, he shows there is hope around the world and that there are people who care passionately about children enough to make a difference.

In the words of Friedrich Froebel, "Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood, for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child's soul." and I whole heartily applaud Indian Poet Tagore's strongly: " Children are living beings - more living than adults, who have built shells of habit around themselves. Therefore it is absolutely necessary for their mental health and development that they should have not only schools for their lessons, but a world whose guiding spirit is personal love."

As the author reminds us each newborn born into our world is 'A renewed message that God has not lost faith in humankind."

Highlighting clear steps to change our often careless attitude in raising children to be future citizens of tomorrow Johann Christoph Arnold tells us outright: If we do not help our children, who will?

5 Stars for this well researched, straight to the heart talk no parent should miss!

When Night Comes by Dan Walsh, Book review

    • File Size: 1747 KB
    • Print Length: 294 pages
    • Publisher: Bainbridge Press (November 1, 2014)
    • Sold by: Amazon Digital Services, Inc.
    • ASIN: B00O2G0D50

    SYNOPSIS:

Jack Turner comes back to Culpepper to give a series of lectures for his old history professor. Within days, he starts having bizarre experiences at night. Like he’s traveling back in time, experiencing the epic events in his lectures firsthand. He has no control over these experiences and can’t make them stop.

Joe Boyd thought he’d left big city crime back in Pittsburgh when he took a detective job in Culpepper, Georgia, a sleepy southern college town. His peaceful life ends when two students turn up dead in two weeks. The coroner is saying natural causes, but something does not add up.

Rachel Cook, a teaching assistant at Culpepper, can’t believe Jack is back in her life again. She’s had a crush on him since she was fourteen, but Jack never knew. He instantly seems attracted to her, but she can tell…something is deeply troubling him.
Watching all this from a distance is Nigel Avery. He’s certain this experiment’s about to unravel. It’ll be his job to tie up all the loose ends when it does.

Bestselling author Dan Walsh is known for page-turning story lines. Fans of his novels The Discovery and What Follows After will especially love…When Night Comes.

"Dan Walsh surprises with his new novel, When Night Comes. This engrossing mystery/thriller takes place in the present day, but with a twist. The main character finds himself going back in time. When he does, as usual, Walsh's historical fiction is spot on. This break from his normal superb Christian fiction proves Walsh is more than one-dimensional."
    - John M. Wills, New York Journal of Books -

    My thoughts:

Fans of the author will understand my enthusiasm for this latest novel of Dan Walsh and be ready for quite a surprise as he explains this is a departure from his usual trend.
We all come to a crossroad in our life and for Dan, it was the right moment to pen something with a bit more suspense and adventure. Just released today, 1 November 2014, you will not want to miss it!

It goes without saying however than in true Dan Walsh's fashion, WHEN NIGHT COMES remains a family read which teens and the older generation (that would be us Folks!) will enjoy immensely with no sex scenes, no strong language, just the perfect mix of good old fashioned values and of course the good guys versus bad guys scenario!

A riveting story, Dan's latest plot involves action and suspense on just about every page but also some well learned life lessons about drugs and guns involvement. Then again we are talking about an accomplished Christian writer who never fails to provide readers with a great tale and a satisfying conclusion.

No need to add anything else unless I wish to reveal spoilers and that would be unfair!
So prepare yourself to enjoy a bit of mystery, a lot of adventure and even a touch of romance in this 5 stars novel (which ranked # 13 on Amazon's Christian fiction suspense category already in October!)

A note to Dan: Tasteful entertainment, great plot and solid characters which makes me ask immediately: 'When may we expect the next one?'

"My name is Dan Walsh, and I write character-driven novels, both contemporary and historical. Several of my books are love stories and family-life dramas, often compared by reviewers to the works of Nicholas Sparks. But I also love to write suspense novels. Even when writing inspirational books, I want to keep the pages turning.  My goal, whether writing contemporary or historical, inspirational or suspense, is for my readers to feel satisfied and thoroughly entertained. In short, to feel a strong inner compulsion to go right out and pick up another one of my books. "
