Hey God, I've Got Some Guy Named Jonah In My Stomach, Book review & GIVEAWAY

Publisher: B&H Kids (May 1, 2013)
ISBN-13: 978-1433679643

Synopsis:

Oh sure, we'll all heard the story of Jonah and the Whale a hundred times. But have we heard it from the perspective of the whale who experienced that history-making event?

Hey God, I've Got Some Guy Named Jonah in My Stomach and I Think I'm Gonna Throw Up! imagines how that great sea creature from the incident might tell his side of the story, helping kids ages 4 to 8 discover a creative way of learning about that guy who was supposed to go to Ninevah.

The "Parent Connection" feature will help moms and dads take the story further with scripture references and tips on how to talk with their children about what really happened. There's even a free online app to make this bright retelling even more animated and interactive.

My thoughts:

Oh to be a child again! What better way to teach a child God's way than by telling them these new and quirky versions of the Bible?
Troy Schmidt uses his extensive talents in telling this famous story (and others) to children age 4 to 8 but this time from the whale's point of view. Be prepared for a chuckle or two!

A lesson in obedience, the book includes the bonus feature 'Parent connection' to help us guide little ones and understand we each have a choice to obey God or not.

With colourful illustrations little ones will surely enjoy discovering as you read them this story, 'Hey God, I've got some guy named Jonah in my stomach' is guaranteed to be a hit with one and all!

At only 32 pages this juvenile nonfiction story will be released on 1 May 2013!

5 Stars!!

Ring The Bell, DVD review & GIVEAWAY

'He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose'

DVD Release Date: April 9, 2013
Rated: PG
ASIN: B00B58FWYA
TRAILER (HERE)

Synopsis:

Sometimes the next big thing isn t what you expect. Slick, big city sports agent Rob Decker has it all. But on his latest mission to sign a high school baseball superstar, Rob becomes stranded in a small town where the simplicity of life and the faith of the people stands in stark contrast to his own fast-paced, win-at-all-costs mindset.
Torn between these two worlds, will Rob have the courage to let faith transform his life? RING THE BELL features Christian music artists Casting Crowns, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Matthew West, along with baseball legends Rick Sutcliffe, John Kruk, and Ben Zobrist. This heartwarming story of redemption will entertain and inspire the whole family.

My thoughts:

Let me begin by saying this Provident Film is well worth 5 stars! Not being a sport fan I almost dismissed this multi talented movie (including Steven Curtis Chapman, Marc Hall and his Casting Crowns and a cameo appearance of Matthew West). I only noticed the baseball feature (oops, sorry, not a fan!) and I would have missed so much!

An amazing family movie with a beautiful message guaranteed to inspire even the most supercilious amongst us, Ring The Bell follows the engaging plot of the successful CEO and President of a sports agency whose mission is to sign up potential sports stars and of course make more money.

This time however he faces a young man who has already decided on a different path, that of becoming a doctor and wants none of the gifts and big contract Rob offers him.
Stranded in town, Rob attends a baseball match and discover amongst the players a face he has not seen in many years, possibly a bigger fish for his company to lend. But God has other plans!

What follows is an eye opener for Rob who can no longer deny his life could be much more rewarding if only he has the courage to accept Christ in it!

Two notes of interest in this special feature movie are first of all, the small part of the local minister played by none other than Steven Curtis Chapman. Welcoming Rob to town he tells him the story behind the quote on his church's billboard:
'He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose'.
For those familiar with 'Beyond the Gates of Splendor, see my review (HERE), it was like a bolt of lightning as I heard Steven's reminder of this unbelievable message of love and forgiveness!
'Faith...Because they believed, they gave it all...'

The second part was the talented Marc Hall and his Casting Crowns featured in concert in the little town Rob finds himself stranded into. I had never heard the group before and was so enthralled, listened to the video over and over! 'Come to the Well's amazing message will leave you wanting more!

North Of Hope: A Daughter's Artic Journey, Book review

Publisher: Zondervan (April 9, 2013)
ISBN-13: 978-0310328766

Synopsis:

After her parents are killed in a rare grizzly attack, the author is forced into a wilderness of grief. Turning to loves she learned from her father, Polson explores the perilous terrain of grief through music, the natural world, and her faith. Her travels take her from the suburbs of Seattle to the concert hall where she sings Mozart's Requiem, and ultimately into the wilderness of Alaska's remote Arctic and of her heart.

This deeply moving narrative is shot through with the human search for meaning in the face of tragedy. Polson's deep appreciation for the untamed and remote wilderness of the Alaskan Arctic moves her story effortlessly between adventure, natural history, and sacred pilgrimage, as much an internal journey as a literal one. Readers who appreciate music or adventure narratives and the natural world or who are looking for new ways to understand loss will find guidance, solace, and a companionable voice in this extraordinary debut.

See Trailer (HERE)

My thoughts:

North of Hope can only be described as a well crafted narrative you should discover for yourself, particularly if you have ever experienced a deep loss! No amount of lyrical prose on the part of this reviewer could provide you with an inkling of the account of one daughter's journey into the Alaskan wilderness. Retracing her father's last trek across the Artic a year later is Shannon's hope to make sense of the tragic event which took his and her stepmum's lives.

Woven throughout the grief and despair of having lost a father, a friend and confident are skillful descriptions of barren lands, incomparable Artic wildlife and flashbacks to earlier and happier times interspersed with tales of the bear's place in Native folklore around the globe.

Together with adopted brother Ned and friend Sally, Shannon starts her quest in Kaktovik, at the northern edge of Alaska, their goal to raft the Hulahula river following directives found in her father's diary.
Arranging for their rafting supplies and a bush pilot to fly them to Grassers strip, their starting point, is however the easy part. The weather does not cooperate and requires of the trio an overnight stay in town, the writer's description of the only available accommodation an interesting highlight!

North of Hope is a labour of love, a search for continuation, a testament that you can go on despite the grief or perhaps because of it. It is also a story of deep faith shared by someone who finds herself on the edge of uncharted land, her larger than life father gone forever. To understand Shannon, her undeniable love of music and adventures, you should first read her biography.

In the end, like a beautiful but unfinished symphony, Shannon's 'thoughts about going to the Artic are not merely an interest but a necessity, to see the place where they died and the river which became their Requiem'...
She needed to finish their trip.

Note: I delayed posting this review as I shared this story with my family. By now a well thumbed book, we are in total agreement: North of Hope is worth much more than 5 stars!

The Heiress of Winterwood, Book review & GIVEAWAY

Publisher: Thomas Nelson (April 9, 2013)
ISBN-13: 978-1401688356

Synopsis:

Darbury, England, 1814
Amelia Barrett gave her word. Keeping it could cost her everything.

Amelia Barrett, heiress to an estate nestled in the English moors, defies family expectations and promises to raise her dying friend’s baby. She’ll risk everything to keep her word—even to the point of proposing to the child’s father—a sea captain she’s never met.

When the child vanishes with little more than an ominous ransom note hinting at her whereabouts, Amelia and Graham are driven to test the boundaries of their love for this little one.
Amelia’s detailed plans would normally see her through any trial, but now, desperate and shaken, she’s forced to examine her soul and face her one weakness: pride.

Graham’s strength and self-control have served him well and earned him much respect, but chasing perfection has kept him a prisoner of his own discipline. And away from the family he has sworn to love and protect.
Both must learn to have faith and relinquish control so they can embrace the future ahead of them.

My thoughts:

Regency style novels owes their popularity to a basic scenario, so well known by readers of the genre, they can often predict the outcome of the lines.
The distinction in the good, sometime very good novel of any particular genre encompasses in my opinion the locale, the lesser known historical details allowing us to perceive if only for a brief moment, this period life in all its glory, the unexpected twist of the story and most importantly, charismatic characters, all unfortunately lacking in this story.
Authors such as Charles Dickens, Jane Austen  for i.e. are still remembered for their astute study of a Society they often depicted with no small amount of sarcasm and the myriad of details they showcased for our pleasure.

This Christian novel's heroine is Amelia whom we discover has promised to care for a dying woman's child. Her nefarious intended has no wish to saddle himself with another man's daughter and Amelia will not abandon the little girl she has come to love as her own.
When the child's father, a sea Captain, arrives to claim the baby he has never met, Amelia offers her extensive estate and her hand in exchange for matrimony. Married, she will come into a substantial inheritance and will provide for the child whilst the Captain will return to ship and crew and sail the seven seas.
Into the plot comes the friendly vicar's wife, the reliable estate manager, the jealous cousin, the cold and calculated uncle, the reprobate brother and the trusted seafaring friend of our young Captain to name a few characters.

I will not spoil this first novel by revealing the entire plot but let's just say 'The Heiress of Winterwood' was a pleasurable light Christian read, which but for one or two thematic contents more appropriate to adults, is aimed mostly at the young adult audience.
In retrospective it might have in fact been more attractive as a sequel!
'The Heiress of Winterwood', Book 1 of Whispers of the Moors series, hinted at potential but with its Philistine title and cover, it failed to hold my attention.

I gave it 3 1/2 stars.

Sweet Sanctuary by Kim Vogel Sawyer, Book review & GIVEAWAY

Publisher: Bethany House Publishers (April 1, 2013)
ISBN-13: 978-0764207891

Synopsis:

Lydia Eldredge longs to provide a sanctuary for her son, Nicky. But a constant threat comes from Nicky's drug-addicted father, who wants the boy and seems willing to do whatever it takes to get him.

Dr. Micah Hatcher serves the immigrant population in Queens, but under cover of darkness he provides another service that must not be discovered lest his and his brother's lives be in danger.

When Lydia and Micah's paths cross, they are suddenly wrapped up in each other's callings. Through unforeseen twists and turns, they seek a refuge of safety--for Nicky, for themselves, and for the needy people God unexpectedly puts in their lives.

My thoughts:

'Sweet Sanctuary' story is set against the 1940's home front of Boston, Massachusetts and Queens, N.Y.
As a nurse Lydia was once powerfully attracted to Dr. Micah Hatcher at Shoffield AFB but he could never envision a future with someone who did not believe fully in God.
They parted ways 5 years ago, she to return home and raise Nicky, her best friend's child. Nicky's Mum died in childbirth after begging Lydia to keep the sweet little boy out of harm's way as Nicky's father is a drug addict.

Now years later, Micah works in a clinic in Queens' poorest neighbourhood. There an influx of immigrants, many escaping Nazi occupied territories, need him now more than ever.  By day the clinic is open to all, at night it provides Micah the ideal opportunity to help his brother, a Minister now working behind enemy lines in war torn Russia.

When a lettre reaches Micah claiming he is Nicky's father, he travels to Boston to confront Lydia and her family. Meeting the sweet little boy reminds the young physician of his own life's loneliness but his duty lies elsewhere so until war is over, his life is in Queens. Before departing however he reminds Lydia that until the child is recognized legally as hers, she is in fact liable to the law.

In the meantime Nic Pantin knows someone is hiding his son and he haunts the midwife who delivered Nicky in hopes to locate his whereabouts. Nicky could be the answer to his needs for 'candy' and a new life.

When events take a dramatic turn and all might be lost, Micah's strong faith and Lydia's determination to keep the boy leads to an interesting twist in this story!

I always enjoy stories against the WW2 background, but it is not until I read Sarah Sundin's novels that I became better acquainted with US front line and home front. My first novel by Kim Vogel Sawyer, I was pleasantly surprised at the many historical facts she incorporated in 'Sweet Sanctuary'.  For me this is often the best part of a plot line right after charismatic protagonists and sub characters.

A heartwarming Christian novel, Sweet Sanctuary gives readers and fans a realistic view of those challenging years and the sacrifice of so many in times of conflicts.
Complete with just the right touch of wartime romance and a solid reminder that God is always with us, Sweet Sanctuary is a novel you will not want to miss!

5 stars!

ANZAC Day...

Today our friends Down Under remember their countrymen and women by honouring their sacrifice in times of conflict, most particularly on the 25th April 1915 as Australian and New Zealand troops landed at Gallipoli...

For Australia, as for many nations, the First World War remains the most costly conflict in terms of deaths and casualties. From a population of fewer than five million, 416,809 men enlisted, of which over 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner.

Captive In Iran by M. Rostampour and M. Amirizadeh, Book review

Publisher: Tyndale Momentum (April 2, 2013)
ISBN-13: 978-1414371207

Synopsis:

Embark on a chilling journey inside one of the world’s darkest and most dangerous places: Evin, the notorious Tehran prison. Here, prisoners are routinely tortured, abused, and violated. Executions are frequent and sudden. But for two women imprisoned for their Christian faith—Maryam Rostampour and Marziyeh Amirizadeh—this hell on earth was a place of unlikely grace as they reflected God’s love and compassion to their fellow prisoners and guards. Against all odds, Evin would become the only church many of them had ever known.

In Captive in Iran, Maryam and Marziyeh recount their 259 days in Evin. It’s an amazing story of unyielding faith—when denying God would have meant freedom. Of incredible support from strangers around the world who fought for the women’s release. And of bringing God’s light into one of the world’s darkest places—giving hope to those who had lost everything, and showing love to those in despair.

My thoughts:

This account of Maryam Rostampour and Marziyeh Amirizadeh's 259 days of captivity in Evin's notorious prison in Iran will open your eyes to the real threats and persecutions Christians still experience today for their faith.
These amazing two young women send a strong message to the rest of the world the Christian faith is alive and strong in Iran, growing still despite the horrific conditions, bringing hope and love to believers and non believers alike.

"Witness" said Christ...
Locked away but not silenced...

In reading this book you will follow the amazing, often frightening journey of these two Christian friends who found themselves imprisoned in one of the most notorious detention center in Iran. Witnessing and praying for the other inmates trapped inside Evin, they gather those too often invisible almost forgotten faces, lost souls to reveal Christ's true love for his brethren.

To this day, there are hundreds of men and women still held captive in Evin, living in unbelievable conditions, persecuted for their faith and for demanding their rights as citizens of the world.
It is ironic that in being jailed, both friends realized they were "in the best place they had ever been for bearing witness to people hungry for Jesus' gospel". God's will? One for God, zero to the jailers!

In three years time, Maryam and her friend Marziyeh placed New Testaments  into the hands of twenty thousands of their countrymen, started two secret places of worship before being detained in Evin in 2009.

'Captive in Iran 'is the triumphing story of Christian love in a deep pit of hell, one I hope you will read to honour those who have lost their life for the faith, for those who are still jailed, persecuted because of their beliefs and for the handful who escaped and are trying to raise awareness to the ply of their brethren left behind!

Complete with pictures, this is a chilling yet hopeful book not to be missed! Due to thematic contents however, for mature readers only.

5 Stars!

About the Authors:

Meet two of Christ's followers:  In 'Captive in Iran', Maryam and Marziyeh recount how God used their 259 days in Evin Prison to bring about a miraculous reversal: shining light into one of the world’s darkest places, giving hope to those who had lost everything, and showing love to those in despair.

Both friends acknowledge their book is a miracle as they are still learning English and believe the hand of God is behind it. They believe only He could bring them safely to America, giving them the chance to share with others their story and the ply of other Iranians.

Maryam and Marziyeh were born in Muslim families in Iran and met while studying Christian theology in Turkey in 2005, both having converting to Christianism 6 years before and returning together to Iran to begin a mission outreach!

Stress Test by Richard L. Mabry, M.D., Book review & GIVEAWAY

Publisher: Thomas Nelson (April 9, 2013)
ISBN-13: 978-1401687083

Synopsis:

THEY MAY NOT HAVE ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO CONVICT HIM, BUT THEY HAVE ENOUGH TO RUIN HIS LIFE.

Dr. Matt Newman thought he was leaving his life as a surgeon in private practice for a better one in academic medicine. But the kidnappers who attacked him as he left the hospital at 2 a.m. have no such plans—they just want him dead. Bound and in the trunk of his car, Matt’s only thought is fleeing with his life. He does escape, but at a price: a head injury that lands him in the ICU . . . where he awakens to discover he’s being charged with murder.

Sandra Murray is a fiery, redheaded lawyer who swore she was done with doctors after her last relationship. But when Matt calls, she knows she can’t walk away from defending someone who is truly innocent.
Matt’s career is going down the drain. His freedom and perhaps his life may be next. But with the police convinced he’s a killer and the kidnappers still trying to finish what they started, finding the truth—and the faith to keep going—will be the toughest stress test Matt has ever endured.

My thoughts:

In 'Stress Test' Richard L.Mabry is giving readers an intriguing thriller involving the medical world made all the most plausible because of his own experience as a physician and it is Christian writing to boot! Using layman language and resisting drowning his audience with typical medical jargon known only to professionals, his novel is a pleasurable read!

Let me start by saying this 'whodunit' is fast paced and the author will keep you guessing till the end!

On one hand we have Dr. Matt Newman who is leaving his practice for a staff membership at the Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. On his way to meet his girlfriend that same evening, Dr. Newman is kidnapped, bound, gagged and hidden in the trunk of his car.

His kidnappers in pursuit, he makes a daring escape, unknowingly leaving his wallet and phone behind, and falls head first on the pavement, knocking himself unconscious.
Found by a passerby and recovering at a nearby hospital, he is accused of a murder: a woman's body has been found in his car trunk, his identifications nearby.

As staggering evidences piles up against him, Matt calls upon Sandra Murray's legal expertise, a defense attorney with her own personal misgivings but who might very well be the only one who believes in his innocence.
The plot thickens as it is soon apparent Matt's life is at stake, God and Sandra the only ones he can trust!

As with any well executed story (and this one is excellent!), there is only so much you wish to reveal for fear to spoil it fore readers! Dr. Mabry instills the right dramatic touch to his plot line to make you wonder who has it in for the physician. Meanwhile as they work together to find the true killer's identity, Matt and Sandra places their faith in God's design for them.
You'll find yourself turning page after page to discover the extent of this writer's skills in no time!
