I just finished reading 'Trouble In Store' so as promised here are my thoughts:
'Love in Disguise' was my first novel by Carol Cox (see review HERE) and I looked forward to see what Carol had in store for her readers with 'Trouble in Store'.
Clearly inspired by her beautiful surroundings - not unlike the one her protagonist finds upon her arrival out West - Carol Cox takes us this time from Marietta, Ohio Circa 1885 to Cedar Ridge, Arizona Territory. A mercantile store against this interesting backdrop becomes the setting of this new adventure!
As is her custom, the author blends a good western with a little mystery rounded up with a bit of romance, just what most of us look for to discover in a Historical Fiction.
Melanie Ross is nothing but determined to start afresh in Cedar Ridge as Caleb Nelson soon discovers both of them might very well be co-owners of the mercantile store he inherited from his Uncle.
Caleb and his son Levi have only been four months in town but they are settling in and do not want to see the persistent young woman interfering in the running of the mercantile store. Melanie however is full of ideas to expend their inventory and create more sales.
When threats in the form of missives are discovered, Melanie first assumes Caleb is behind it all.
In the meantime in an attempt to take things in hand, Caleb devises a plan to see Melanie married off, a sure way to not have her underfoot but the plan backfires when dozen of callers offers matrimony to the comely newcomer and she finds out who is behind it all.
Entertaining if slightly predictable, 'Trouble in Store' has a lesson or two for us to uncover...including the danger in gossiping which in this case might endanger the lives of our characters! This is after all the West and bad news travels faster than a herd of spooked cattle!

I don't know how you do it, Noelle, I wish I could stick to all the reading I typically plan but never follow through. I have about five books on my summer reading list and have barely read a couple of pages for only two. Terrible. I think it's all those fresh market tours and recipes distracting me . ;)

I can only credit my maternal Grandmother with my love for Books Marcia. She had a 3rd grader education only but was multilingual and a voracious reader! She traveled and kept detailed diaries of everything she saw until age 93 when she passed away. Her thirst for knowledge was amazing and she enduced in us 'armchair traveling' as you might translate it in English. The local library was a 'must stop' whenever we shopped at the market, even when she had only a few pences in her pocketbook left (each book was rented you might say, unlike in the US).

I only follow a plan when I am in Colombo with a restricted supply of books. In Australia I go berserk and love to jump from one book to another!
ReplyDeleteMystica, I am amazed at the wealth of books in Australia! Love to discover the little gems (old classics, first editions and so on) they have in the land of Down Under!
