On 13 Decembre Saint Lucia is celebrated in Sweden and other Scandinavian countries with candlelight and processions as a part of Christmas celebrations. The eldest girl in each family portrays the Christian Saint who overcame the darkness and found light.
Originally this celebration happened on the longest night of the year (Winter Solstice). Wearing a white robe in the early morning and a crown of candles, the young girls traditionally serves parents and friends Lussekatter or Lucia buns and coffee (or mulled wine).

ReplyDeleteEasy Heather: Stop on by - next ferry at noon! (albeit out of a dozen buns, No 1 Son left us with just 1). I included the recipe in the post for those who wish to try it!
DeleteBlessings,
I have never really notices this tradition before. A friend in Mexico was talking about it the other day. I have seen the pictures of the lady with candles on her head but knew nothing about it. Great post

Many Thanks Janice! I grew up in a very traditional family and Mum introduced a few more she personally loved. This is one of those!
